When I knew I was being accepted for the HEC Summer School back to March, I felt like the happiest girl in the world. My friends and family were as amazed as I, because HEC Paris has been my favorite business school since I first heard about it. It seems like yesterday when they emailed me telling me I was one of the few students with a scholarship for the Summer School; this made me feel on cloud nine because my dreams were coming true. Time flew… and only two weeks ago, I was a new student, with many ideas on mind, ready to start with an intensive Fashion Management course.
It is true that this is a completely new field for me; I am currently working for an IT company in Spain, so Fashion is not really my subject. I chose this course for many reasons: Paris is worldwide known for being the 1st fashion capital, the greatest “maisons” are established here (Chanel, Dior, Saint Laurent, etc.) and the Paris Fashion Week is my favorite, the fact that Gachoucha Kretz is the Director, as well as the main professor of this course, made it even clearer; her fashion knowledge is amazing and she has a big list of contacts in this industry.
What is the Summer School about?
This is something many of us wondered, and you don’t really understand it until you are here. It’s a 360º experience: you live on this amazing campus, with your own room (kitchen and bathroom included for some of us), you have classes with world-class HEC professor but also outstanding guest speakers. There is much more than just the class; the campus is amazing, you have access to all the facilities you could imagine: gym, volleyball court, restaurants, cafeterias, and even a LAKE and a RUGBY FIELD!
The Summer School Team is one of the best things because they take care of you and are always willing to help you if you face any problem. The Summer School is the perfect combination of leisure and academics; on the weekends you can visit the beautiful city of Paris, explore Versailles or just wander around Jouy-en-Josas. We also have some great events on campus: scavenger hunt, a hypnotist, crêpes afternoon and inspiring speeches, among others.
How is the Fashion Management Course experience?
Incredible! I got to know people from many different brands such as L’Oréal Paris, Sandro, Chloé, Lacoste, Karl Lagerfeld, Etam or entrepreneurs like Petitjean Paris and Mazarine. These guest speakers are probably the best part of this course as they give you an insight of their brands, their experiences, and the industry. I have always seen fashion through a Spanish perspective, more focusing on the mass market with brands like Zara or Mango. During this course, I have learned a lot about premium brands and luxury brands which are more related to France. From the product development to the marketing plan or the CRM, we have learned so many interesting things about the fashion industry.
For all these reasons and many more, I feel like HEC Paris is the perfect place to learn during the summer days. Definitely, this has been the best choice I have ever made, and I hope to return as an MSc student in the future.
Thank you HEC, it’s been a pleasure!
