The luxury industry has always been a mystery- an industry I was fascinated by but never had the chance to discover. Walking one day through the corridors of HEC I noticed a video booth standing in a corner and several representatives wearing LVMH T-shirts. I wandered what was all the buzz around the InsideLVMH event. I quickly found out that the company was selecting students from prestigious universities in Europe to give them the opportunity to participate in a full day inside LVMH. The selected students would be able to visit a specific Maison, work on an innovation challenge, attend masterclasses, and visit the headquarters and network with HR representatives. I knew immediately I would love to participate in such an event and everything I had to do was to go inside their video booth and pitch for a minute my idea about innovation in the luxury industry. After a couple of weeks- voila! I received an email saying: “Congratulations! We are pleased to announce that you have been selected to be part of INSIDE LVMH on November 22nd, 2016 in Paris.” I was even happier when I was assigned the Sephora Maison and day by day I was getting more anxious to discover LVMH. Assigning all participating students a different Maison triggered a lot of excitement and curiosity.
Champs Elysées VIP
22 of November came very fast and I perfectly remember the morning when I saw myself in front of the Sephora office, receiving my badge for the entire day. The day started with several presentations from Sephora managers and with a flavor of the beauty sector in the luxury industry. Next, we visited the Maison’s flagship store on Champs Elysées. It was an exciting experience as we were welcomed by the employees in the store with applauses and music on a red carpet as if we were movie stars! Walking through the store, we heard stories about how some brands were born and what makes the relationship between Sephora and its customers so unique. The story that impressed me the most was the story of a bride who on the day of her wedding came all the way to Sephora to have her make-up done because she developed a very close relationship with one of the make-up artists there. For her, trust and loyalty were the most important elements. Indeed, customer experience and strong relationships are a great asset for the Maison.
After getting a taste of Sephora, we all moved to the headquarters of LVMH where we were welcomed with a very delicious and select lunch buffet. Of course, we had to get a lot of energy for one of the most exciting parts of the day: the innovation challenge! We were given 1 hour and 15 minutes to prepare a one minute and a half pitch about how we perceived innovation in the Maison we visited during the morning. Disruption, digital, freedom of experience, technology, DNA of the Maison were the most important words we touched upon while presenting on the stage. After each Maison presented their pitch, everyone had to vote for the best. The surprise came when our team won the challenge! We were all extremely happy and proud of our work.
Meeting Bernard Arnault
Nevertheless, surprises kept on coming as we were moving to the Fondation Louis Vuitton. There, we had the honor of having a master class from Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH. It was an inspiring speech, which gave us even more insights about working inside the company. The evening continued with a cocktail networking activity, where we had the chance to speak to managers coming from diverse departments. Furthermore, a beautiful exhibition called the Chtchoukine exhibition gathering paintings from well-known artists such as Picasso or Monet was available for us to visit. The InsideLVMH event finished off our memorable day with glasses of Moët Hennessy champagne.
Sitting in a taxi on my way back home I realized I had a big smile on my face as I was happy for all the inspiring moments which I got the chance to live during the InsideLVMH. If I had to pick three words to describe this event, I would probably choose: innovation, inspiration and leadership.
