The lecture weeks on campus
Back on campus, we debriefed that week with Prof. Van Waeyenberge, before hearing the presentations of our guest speakers. For instance, French political scientist Thomas Guénolé gave a lecture about federalization, making a comparison between the European Union and the United States. He is today a prominent figure in the media, and an advisor to many influential politicians. It was amazing to be able to listen to him for a couple of hours and to ask him all our questions.
Finally, we were divided in groups and we wrote reports about an issue among all those we had tackled, like European fiscal policy or the path to federalization. Some of them were sent to MEPs or other personalities we had met and I know for sure that some were used in the making of new European policy. It was a clear opportunity for us to delve into a subject and to not only discover Europe but also to think how things can and should evolve.
One of the best experiences in my life
Organizing this Academy was a wonderful experience, on so many aspects. Within the three of us, we soon learnt to trust one another and we easily split all the work. For instance, I mainly focused on everything linked to logistics. We formed a great team and we managed to solve all the issues we had before, during and after the Academy. Of course there were some problems, but we could rely on one another to make the best decisions. And all of the participants together, we spent four wonderful evenings in two of the most beautiful, exciting cities in Europe.
On the academic level, I can say now that I know so much more about the European Union than before. I have identified some flaws of the system, but also many of its strengths, and it motivated me to try to broaden more and more my knowledge on those issues. That helped me very much during an internship that I did last year in a media group, where I had to deal with European compliance regulation.
But most importantly perhaps, I had three great weeks with many friends and I created so many memories which I will recall for a very long time. I know that I will still see them in years, to talk about Europe or simply to share a drink. We have created bonds which will last our entire lives.
