Run-up to the Hult Prize final for HEC Paris students’ audacious project

Rehearsal HULTBee Healthy is an innovative solution of disease detection for underprivileged people around the world. The Bee Healthy team counts five HEC students from the MSc in Sustainable Development. Their project: harness the power of bees´ olfactory systems to detect diseases such as diabetes, cancer and tuberculosis on a person’s breath. This is an economical and easy solution to help diagnose diabetes and other diseases for 25 million people living in urban slums around the world by the end of 2019.

Last January, Bee Healthy won the London Regional Final of the Hult Prize, an international Challenge for student social entrepreneurs dedicated to solving the most pressing social challenges on the planet. The six finalist teams were chosen from over 2,000 applications. Other finalists include teams from UPenn, the Indian School of Business or ESADE. The global winner will be announced at the Hult Prize Final which will take place in New York on September 23rd, and will receive US$1,000,000 in start-up capital to launch their new social enterprise.

Pilot project stage in Mumbai’s biggest slum

Bee Healthy’s team was in Boston in July to test the idea on a group of people with known diabetes. The experiment, at the Joslin Diabetes Center, found that bees can be trained to detect diabetes on a patient’s breath. HEC team’s pilot project started on August 18 in Dharavi, Mumbai’s biggest slum.  The pilot project came to life thanks to a local company, ‘Under the Mango Tree’, which agreed to lend bees to HEC’s team. They first elaborated the training procedure of the bees and then started the experimental phases of their project by developing a prototype device that could be used to test urban slum dwellers for diseases using bees.

As part of the competition, Bee Healthy still has to face two other challenges during the final: prove that they can reach 25 million people by 2019, and present the financial feasibility and growth potential of the business model.
